do not agitate
This is something from the days when I worked the graveyard shift. Interesting to know that there are still loads of people awake in the city in the early mornings.
oh yes, i am just back from the evening shift, and trying to beat today's deadline. This piece definitely needs some re-working later on, I think. :)
back alley drinks stall, Hill Street, 2am
warm night
2a.m.
dim
back alley
drinks stall
gurgling babble
dubious
people
bikers
late night workers
skivers
a girl with heavy make-up, tiny dress
then
a squad car
slithers to the entrance
roof lights flashing
red blue.
doors slammed
all eyes
nervous
shifty
on the two cops
moving towards us
gun holsters
slapping thighs
you could hear
a pin dropped
cigarettes no longer
dangle between lips
then the more senior
of the two
the one with the stripes
raises his fingers in a V
smiles to the stall-keeper
kopi-o dua, bungkus.
and the chatter resume to its gurgling babble

"kopi-o dua, bungkus" roughly means "two black coffees, takeaway", translated from Malay.
