diary of gluttony #5
Reporting from : Chinatown Complex Food Centre
What I ate :
First, some updates. This hawker centre was closed for more than 3 months for renovation works and recently reopened. There are some stalls that are still banging in their sign boards, and some still closed, but mainly, most are open for business. I think most of the old timers are back. The Michelin-starred soya sauce chicken stall is there, long queues and all, but now at 2 p.m., it is still serving the chicken, which in the old days before reno, the chicken is sold out by 1 p.m. I will have to try it another day.
I tried out a Hainanese chicken rice stall. It is good but not as good as those I tried at Bedok or Maxwell.
The popiah at Ann Chin Popiah is good, pretty garlicky and crunchy, with a light and not too sweet sauce. You can taste freshness in the vegetables.
A dessert of black sesame and peanut paste was next (the owner said we are allowed to choose 4 types of sweet desserts in the bowl). Brings back memories of those old hawkers who goes around the neighbourhood in pushcarts selling their stuff. Ah, the stall name again.
Finally, a stall I can named. The Old Amoy Chendol stall is back at the centre. And it is still as good as before. The coconut milk, with a hint of saltiness, the pandan jelly's smooth texture, the adzuki beans, and the palm sugar syrup all come together to make a smooth tasting dessert. And still at only $2.

diary of gluttony #4
Reporting from : Holland Drive Market and Food Centre
What I ate :
Cantonese wonton noodles, stall #02-23. Prepared in a very traditional way, the wonton is silky and smooth, with generous fillings of fresh shrimp and pork. The soup is flavourful, with hints of dried fish. The noodles are springy, not overcooked. Extra points given because the aunty helper offered to scissor-cut noodles for this old man. At $4 a meal, good value. Recommended.
chee cheong fun, arrg! forgot the stall number but the stall name reminds me of a Korean TV drama. When I was living in the area in my twenties, there was a stall in a coffeeshop that I swear, sells the best chee cheong fun in Singapore. I suspect this could be the same stall. (I went to look around the coffeeshop and the stall was no longer there.)Okay, back to the chee cheong fun. It was still made by hand. I asked for the char siew filling, at $3.50 a plate. It is still good, the sauce aromatic, the skin thin, but I find the texture of the skin a tad not that silky. Anyway, still worth a try.

diary of gluttony #3
Reporting from : Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre
What I ate :
Grilled chicken with mushroom rice and herbal potatoes. Also whack a side dish of potato wedges and a pumpkin soup. The chicken is done just right, the rice aromatic and fluffy. The herbal potatoes are good too, the soup quite thick and flavourful. The portions are more generous than what I get at other places. All these for the grand price of $7.90, served at a stall called Wild Olives on the second floor. Be prepared to wait, always a good queue. I have been to this place a few times, and the standard is still good. highly recommended.
After all that food, a nice cup of Teh C to wash it down at Abang's Teh Tarik, a drinks stall. After this teh C, the rest of the Teh Cs at other stalls taste like plain water. That cup costs me $1 (I have tried Teh C at $1.80 and it tasted like dish-washing water). Of course it's recommended.
Burp!

What I ate :
Fish Porridge at Stall #02-121. the porridge has a nice consistency, not too lumpy or watery. the fish slices are fresh and quite thick. at $3.40 a bowl, good value. recommended.
Chicken and Pork Satay. forgot the stall number, but near to the porridge stall. the meat is okay but the ketupat is a bit hard. on the whole, an average meal. at 60 cents a stick, i think it is also average value.

Reporting from : Toa Payoh Lorong 8 Block 210 Food Centre
What I ate :
Curry rice at stall #01-28. Average taste. value okay ($3.40 for a pork chop, ngor hiang, and brinjals). lone server surly. probably had a bad day.
Char kway teow. nice texture, not too oily, great heaty wok flavour. value ok ($3). Need to take a queue number (look out for the electronic display), quite a wait. but recommended.
Tapioca in coconut milk at stall #01-25. a surprise. doesn't look too appealing at first glance. but good taste. tapioca is soft, not lumpy. sweet but not cloying. at only $1.50 a dish, great value. recommended.
Teh C. can't remember the stall number. but the young server had lots of tattoos. good value at $1.10. taste good too, unlike most kopitiams.
