GloPoWriMo 2025 - Day #11

Okay, don't just scroll social media everyday. Do something useless.

How about GloPoWriMo 2025?

talking to myself

Hey bro, you know I don't have much money right now, who brings so much cash over to this jungle? We are in the army, man. Anyway, I spent most of it on smokes, brought two cartons of marlboros over, heard the local ones are shit. The rest for R&R, we need that, the pubs, the massage parlors. It's not cheap in the city here in these 70's, everyone's trying to rip you off.

Talking about money, I made some at the blackjack games in the barracks. It's wild man, almost every night. One guy we called the "Colonel" completely lost his shirt and shit, says the dealer rigged his games. Pulls out a bayonet. We all restrained him, of course, no way the officers or MPs get a whiff of this. Then we pass a helmet around, toss in whatever change we can for his R&R.

Oh, if you have a chance to come over here, let the bedbugs bite you.

The prompt at SingPoWriMo Day7 was to "write a poem addressed to your younger self". I think the above qualifies.

SingPoWriMo 2016 Day #30

SingPoWriMo 2016 Day #30

So this is it, the final day!

what have i got myself into?

on waiting to be enlisted
early freaking 70's

so this is it
this is the mousetrap
sprung
i have been listening
to Uriah Heep's The Park'
speaking of loss
and needless wars
looping looping
till the track is
scratched thin on the vinyl.

outside just a floor below
the noon traffic lumbers by
horns angry, tyres screeching,
men swearing in dialects
strange that i did not
noticed it before
those noises
or the stand-fan
in the corner of the room
blades turning
stirring stale air
dust motes settling
on the linoleum
again

i am slouched on the
battered sofa
my mother yells me
to move my ass
nothing interest me now
maybe just the music
or the static
in the head
i am not even
angry anymore
and that's dangerous.

in a couple of days
the army will come for me.

SingPoWriMo 2016 - Day #9

SingPoWriMo 2016 Day #9

This is crazy.

what have i got myself into?

returning

returning back
to camp
from the hills,
no one noticed
that
daylight had broken,
the toads
had stopped croaking,
only
our muddy boots,
our rifles rusting
from last night's rain
and
the grass,
green and
slick with dew.

shiki kukai - scar

The theme for the September 2015 Free Format section of the monthly kukai at haikuworld was 'Scar'. The results were out, and again, back to back, it scored 0 votes. :).

shiki kukai - returning home

The theme for the May 2015 Free Format section of the monthly kukai at haikuworld was 'Returning Home'. After just a couple of drafts, I was satisfied with the final product.

I thought it could do better, but a return of 6 points is not too bad. :)

shiki kukai - alone

The theme for the Free Format section of the monthly kukai at haikuworld was 'alone'. How hard can that be? :)

Well, hard enough for my entry to attract only 4 votes. :D

NaPoWriMo 2013, Day #17 - the hills

This is something from my military days.

the hills

we hate those hills don't we?
coated by an armour of lallang,
the mimosa like barbed wires.

in our foxholes, smelling of earth
we are hoping there is no rain
at least for this night.

a lighter flares, a cigarette glows
red in the next hole
a click of a safety catch,

a muffled cough,
then we settle down
for the night

the stars above
have come out to watch,
peeping from a veil
of moth-eaten clouds,
the twinkling lights
of apartment blocks
down slope.
we can only imagine
people sleeping,
reading the papers,
watching tv with a beer,

home & safe

while we are here
cradling weapons,
thinking of home too

but mostly
of sleep

Wordle : the toad

The past week was a very tough one in the office, and this week promises to be even worse. Still I managed to have some some fun with Wordle. It's something like the "word cloud" you see in some blogs. Head over to Wordle.net if you want to give it a try.

Some old thoughts from my military days triggered the poem. Most of the words are in the "wordle". This is a filler for the week while I try to manage the time.

NaPoWriMo 2011 - # 23

# 23

Coming back home one night from work, the full moon was exceptionally large and bright, and from where I looked, it seemed to be trapped in the branches of a tree. Plus, a video game combined to inspire this piece. :)

okehazama moon

the moon
hanging in the
 branches of the
 rain tree like a lit
   japanese lantern
   and i half expect
the samurai riders
     of the Oda to
come flying out
like dark ravens
out of the light
hungry as at

Okehazama

NaPoWriMo 2011 - # 11

# 11

do not agitate

Re-calling my army days...

in the night the weeds

in the night the weeds, the ferns were
all black amorphous shadows that
rustled and creaked and we sat
among them listening to
the quarrels of
the frogs,
the toads,
as we broke regulations
lighting up a smoke, cupping
the cigarettes in our hands to hide
the glow of burning tips, waiting, rifles
cold on skin, for the next detail to relief us.
